En los paisajes áridos de La Guajira (Colombia), Georgina, una mujer trans Wayúu en el tercer acto de su vida, sabe que su tiempo se agota y desea transformar su existencia. Sin nada que perder, emprende un viaje para reencontrarse con sus hermanos, quienes no hablan español y apenas sobreviven en los márgenes del opaco sistema burocrático colombiano. Entre heridas abiertas, recuerdos y distancias geográficas y emocionales insondables, Georgina y su pueblo coinciden en que ya es suficiente. Alma del desierto surge como una historia de resiliencia, un símbolo de esperanza y una lucha ferviente por la justicia.
In the arid landscapes of La Guajira (Colombia), Georgina, a transgender Wayúu woman in the third act of her life, knows that her time is running out and wants to change her existence. With nothing to lose, she sets out to meet her siblings, who don’t speak Spanish and barely survive on the fringes of the opaque Colombian bureaucratic system. Amid open wounds, memories, and unfathomable geographical and emotional distances, Georgina and her people agree that enough is enough. Alma del desierto emerges as a story of resilience, a symbol of hope, and a fervent struggle for justice.

Mónica Taboada-Tapia estudió antropología y tiene un título en cine y televisión. Sus proyectos cinematográficos han sido presentados en mercados y laboratorios como TorinoFilmLab, Tribeca Film Institute Network, DocsBarcelona, DocMontevideo Pitch, The NYT Op-Docs, Pulitzer Center y Tribeca Film Institute International Pitch. Dirigió los cortometrajes Fidel (2012), Two-Spirit (2021) y Red Flag (2023), todos seleccionados en festivales como IDFA, Outfest, BFI Flare, New Filmmakers, FICCI y Palm Springs, obteniendo varios premios. Fue nominada a los Premios Macondo 2022 de la Academia Colombiana de Cine y a los IDA Awards 2022 de la International Documentary Association. Además, produjo el documental Causas Elevadas (2021) y fue la showrunner de la serie El placer de huir del mundo (2021). Es fundadora de la productora Guerrero Films y actualmente trabaja en el cortometraje The Cedar y en los largometrajes From the Hood y Queen of the People, con el apoyo del FDC y de Ancine. Alma del desierto (2024) es su primer largometraje, seleccionado por Giornate degli Autori del Festival de Cine de Venecia.
Mónica Taboada-Tapia studied anthropology and holds a degree in filmmaking and TV. Her film projects have been presented in markets and labs such as TorinoFilmLab, Tribeca Film Institute Network, Docs Barcelona, DocMontevideo Pitch, The NYT Op-Docs, Pulitzer Center, and Tribeca Film Institute International Pitch. She directed the short films Fidel (2012), Two-Spirit (2021), and Red Flag (2023), all selected for film festivals like IDFA, Outfest, BFI Flare, New Filmmakers, FICCI, and Palm Springs, winning awards. She was nominated for the 2022 Macondo Awards from the Colombian Academy and the 2022 IDA Awards from the International Documentary Association. Additionally, she produced the documentary Causas Elevadas (2021) and was the showrunner for the series The Pleasure of Escaping the World (2021). She is the founder of the production company Guerrero Films and currently working on the short film “The Cedar” and the feature films “From the Hood” and “Queen of the People”, with the support of FDC or Ancine. Alma del Desierto (2024) is her feature film debut, selected for Giornate degli Autori (Venice Film Festival).
