Sinopsis

Landi es un padre que acampa en secreto en los humedales de Zapata, donde caza cocodrilos con las manos para alimentar a su familia. La radio informa cientos de muertes diarias por la pandemia y una creciente tensión social en Cuba. En la costa, su esposa Mercedes busca carbón para cocinar y cuida de su hijo, que padece de un autismo severo. Pasan los días y Mercedes se impacienta. Landi ya debería haber regresado, pero no hay noticias de él. Teme que algo le haya pasado, pero no puede decir nada para no delatarlos. Finalmente, él reaparece, cargando los alimentos que les permiten sobrevivir, antes de volver al pantano. Sus vidas son un ciclo marcado por la necesidad y la ausencia. 

Landi is a father who secretly camps in the marshlands of Zapata, where he hunts crocodiles with his hands to feed his family. The radio reports hundreds of daily deaths from the pandemic and strong social tensions in Cuba. On the coast, his wife Mercedes searches for charcoal to cook and takes care of their son, who suffers from severe autism. Days go by, and Mercedes becomes impatient. Landi should have returned by now, and there is no news of him. She fears something has happened to him, but she cannot say anything to avoid giving them away. He finally appears, carrying the food that enables them to survive, before having to return to the marsh. Their lives are a cycle, plagued by need and absence.

David Bim comenzó sus estudios en la Escuela Superior de Cine y Audiovisuales de Cataluña (ESCAC). En 2015, escribió y dirigió Los últimos dos, un cortometraje basado en la historia real de una pareja de ancianos —los últimos habitantes de un pueblo fantasma en una zona montañosa del interior de España. Ese mismo año, fue seleccionado para estudiar Dirección en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de Cuba (EICTV). Desde 2017, crea contenido audiovisual y cultural para Taller Chullima, un espacio cultural sin fines de lucro en La Habana, donde artistas internacionales imparten talleres y clases magistrales a residentes locales con interés en las artes. En 2019, participó en la Bienal de La Habana con la pieza visual Viaje infinito, que explora la macroescultura del artista Wilfredo Prieto en el paisaje rural cubano. Desde 2021, compagina su carrera artística con la docencia. Su taller de cine Construyendo una nueva ficción fue reconocido con el EUNIC Cluster Fund Cuba 2023 —red de institutos culturales nacionales de la Unión Europea— por su contribución pedagógica y cultural en el país. En 2023, fundó y actualmente dirige FICCLAB, un programa internacional de la EICTV enfocado en el desarrollo de primeras películas a través de talleres, clases magistrales y sesiones de tutoría con cineastas, guionistas y productores internacionales. Como director, dedicó ocho años al desarrollo y rodaje de su ópera prima, Hacia el oeste, en Zapata. La película tuvo su estreno el 9 de abril de 2025 en Visions du Réel (Nyon, Suiza), donde obtuvo el Premio de la Crítica Internacional (FIPRESCI) y el Premio Especial del Jurado en la sección Burning Lights. 

 

David Bim began his studies at the Catalonia Film School (ESCAC). In 2015, he wrote and directed The Last Two, a short film based on the true story of an elderly couple—the last inhabitants of a ghost village in rural Spain, isolated in the mountains. That same year, he was selected to study directing at the International Film School of Cuba (EICTV). Since 2017, he has been creating audiovisual and cultural content for Taller Chullima, a nonprofit cultural space in Havana where international artists offer workshops and masterclasses to local residents with an interest in the arts. In 2019, he participated in the Havana Biennial with the visual piece Infinite Journey, which explores Wilfredo Prieto’s macro-sculpture set in Cuba’s rural landscape. Since 2021, he has balanced his artistic career with teaching. His film workshop Constructing A New Fiction was awarded the EUNIC Cluster Fund Cuba 2023 —the network of European Union National Cultural Institutes— in recognition of its pedagogical and cultural contributions in the country. In 2023, he founded and currently directs FICCLAB, an international EICTV program focused on the development of first feature films through workshops, masterclasses, and mentoring sessions with international filmmakers, script doctors, and producers. As a director, he spent eight years developing and filming his debut feature, To the West, In Zapata. The film premiered on April 9, 2025, at Visions du Réel in Nyon, where it was awarded the International Critics’ Prize (FIPRESCI) and the Special Jury Prize in the Burning Lights Competition.
