La Habana, primavera de 1971: El poeta Heberto Padilla acaba de ser puesto en libertad y comparece ante el gremio de escritores cubanos donde entona una “sentida autocrítica”, según sus propias palabras. Se declara agente contrarrevolucionario y acusa de complicidad a muchos de sus colegas ahí presentes, entre ellos, su esposa. Un mes atrás, su arresto bajo los cargos de atentar contra la seguridad del Estado cubano, movilizó a la vanguardia intelectual del mundo entero, quienes dirigieron una carta a Fidel Castro, exigiendo la libertad del poeta, cuyo único pecado fue disentir y criticar a través de su obra poética. El mea culpa del escritor, cuya filmación se muestra por primera vez al público, marca la línea narrativa de una historia, en la que aparecen, además, testimonios de Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jorge Edwards, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Carlos Fuentes y Fidel Castro. “El caso Padilla” es un documental sorprendente que abre una ventana para explorar uno de los aspectos del pasado de Cuba que persisten en su presente: la falta de libertad de expresión y los movimientos del mundo cultural para obtenerla.
Havana, spring of 1971: The poet Heberto Padilla has just been released and appears before the Cuban writers’ union where he intones a “heartfelt self-criticism”, according to his own words. He declares himself a counterrevolutionary agent and accuses many of his colleagues present there of complicity, including his wife. A month ago, his arrest on charges of threatening the security of the Cuban State, mobilized the intellectual vanguard of the entire world, who addressed a letter to Fidel Castro, demanding the freedom of the poet, whose only sin was to dissent and criticize through of his poetic work. The writer’s mea culpa, whose filming is shown to the public for the first time, marks the narrative line of a story, which also includes testimonies from Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jorge Edwards, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Carlos Fuentes, and Fidel Castro. “El caso Padilla” is a surprising documentary that opens a window to explore one of the aspects of Cuba’s past that persist in its present: the lack of freedom of expression and the movements of the cultural world to obtain it.

Cineasta cubano radicado en España. Llega al cine desde el Video-Arte y una reconocida obra como creador de videos musicales y cortos promocionales. Con el film “Tres veces dos”, en el que escribió y dirigió una de las tres historias que lo componen, se alzó con el Zenith de Plata a Mejor Opera Prima en el Festival de Cine de Montreal. Su primer largometraje en solitario, “La Edad de la peseta” (Mediapro-ICAIC), Candidata a los Premios Oscar y Nominada al premio Goya por la Academia de Cine Española, fue estrenada en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto y premiada en múltiples Festivales Internacionales. La Universidad de Houston la incluyó, junto a otros 7 filmes hispanos filmados por Buñuel, Almodóvar, Erice y Cuerda, en el programa de estudios “Modern and Classical Languages. Spanish Films”. En 2020, la Cinemateca de Cuba la eligió entre las diez películas con Mejor Fotografía y Mejor Dirección de arte en la historia del Cine Cubano. Su siguiente película, Omerta (ABRA PROD-ICAIC), obtuvo el premio Coral en la categoría de Mejor Guion Inédito en el XXVII Festival Internacional de Cine en La Habana y fue estrenado al año siguiente en el Festival de Cine de San Sebastián. En 2014, co-dirigió la película documental “Playing Lecuona”, protagonizada por los pianistas Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo y Gonzalo Rubalcaba, acompañados de Ana Belén, Raymundo Amador, Omara Portuondo y otros notables músicos. Este fue premiado en el Festival de Cine de Montreal como Mejor Documental y en el New York International Film Festival, donde recibió el Merit Award.
“El Acompañante”, su más reciente largometraje de ficción, estrenado en HBO USA tras una extensa carrera de festivales, fue su segunda candidatura a los Premios Oscar y reconocido previamente como Mejor Proyecto en Desarrollo en el 61 Festival de Cine de San Sebastián y el premio SGAE Julio Alejandro a mejor guión Iberoamericano. Estuvo nominado a los Premios Platino como Mejor Guión y a los Premios Forqué como mejor película Latinoamericana del año. Obtuvo, además, el Premio del Público en Miami, Toulouse, Málaga y La Habana (2do. premio) y el de mejor guión en HFF New York, donde el presidente del condado de Brooklyn, Eric Adams, le concedió un reconocimiento por “el buen uso del cine como herramienta social”. Actualmente, se encuentra en fase de desarrollo, como creador, de tres series producidas por Tornasol Films, Zeta audiovisual y Wild Horse, además de su próxima película: “El soldado perfecto”.
Cuban filmmaker based in Spain. Made his way into cinema from Videoart where he was recognized as a creator of music videos and short promotional work. With the film “Tres veces dos”, in which he wrote and directed one of the three stories that was incorporated, he rose to new heights and received the Zenith de Plata for best Opera Prima in the Montreal Film Festival. His first solo achievement, “La Edad de la Peseta” (Mediapro-ICAIC), a contender for the Oscars and nominated to a Goya by the Academia de Cine Española (Academy of Spanish Cinema), was premiered in the Toronto’s International Film Festival and won several international awards. The University of Huston included it among 7 other Hispanic films by Buñuel, Almodóvar, Erice and Cuerda, in the study program for “Modern and Classic Languages: Spanish Films”. In 2020 Cuba’s Cinemateca chose it as one among the 10 films with the Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction in the history of Cuban Cinema. His next movie, “Omerta” (ABRA PROD-ICAIC), won the Coral Prize in the category for Best Original Screenplay at La Habana’s XXVII International Film Festival, and it premiered the following year in San Sebastián Film Festival.In 2014 he co-directed the documentary “Playing Lecuona”, starring the pianists Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, with appearances by Ana Belén Raymundo Amador, Omara Portuondo, and other notable musicians. “El Acompañante”, his most recent fiction feature film, premiered on HBO USA following an extensive festival run, was his second Oscars nomination representing his country, and was previously recognized as Best Developing Project along with the SGAE Julio Alejandro award it received for Best Ibero-American Screenplay, at the San Sebastian 61 Edition Film Festival. Furthermore, it was nominated at the Platinum Awards for Best Screenplay and at the Forqué Awards for Best Latin-American Movie of the Year. It also received the People’s Award at Miami, Toulouse, Málaga and La Habana (the 2nd prize), and Best Screenplay in HFF New York, where the Mayor of Brooklyn, EricAdams, awarded him a recognition for “the exceptional use of cinema as a social tool”. At the moment, he finds himself in the developing phase as a creator, of two series produced by Tornasol Films and Zeta Audiovisual, along with his next films: “El Soldado Perfecto”.
